Tornado Desaster

The USA was hit by the 2nd deadliest tornado outbreak since 1950 yesterday and as a lot of you probably know already, Alabama was hit the strongest. Luckily I can say that none of my family and friends up there was hurt. Lauderdale County, the county where I know most people, was spared, whereas all the counties around them had tornadoes touch ground and tore up whole neighborhoods. The pictures are devastating. My American cousin's boyfriends house was ripped apart but no one was hurt there as well. Some people I went to high school with, but that were in grades below me, are studying in Tuscaloosa right now (the location of the University of Alabama). This city was hit the hardest and it sure enough scared everything out of them. One had a tornado go through her apartment complex but it didn't touch the building where she was living in and hiding in her bathtub. Friends from high school that served in the US military and are now in the reserve were activated today. They didn't quite know for what reason yet, but since AL and several other states are in a state of emergency, they will probably be used to help clean up etc.

If you pray, please pray for everybody up there that has lost family, friends & property!

A little late... but better than never... ;)

Yes, I know! 4th of July has already been a while... but I'm having big issues with my internet provider Comcast (unreliable cable connection!!!). I just got a new modem yesterday as they blamed it on the modem, but isn't it strange that the internet was always gone at the same times and then all of a sudden in the middle of the night it came back on and then in the morning it was off again!? Hmmmm...

Well, anyways, right now it's working, so let me tell you about the weekend in Alabama!

I had a fantastic time! 15 months of not seeing my US family was a long time. The kids are 9, 7 and 4 now and it was so great to be back in the country, because out in the country, children have pets of all kinds! I so missed to have some furry friends around!!!

But let's start from the beginning: My big sister Nickole and her son Zevin picked me up at the airport in Huntsville. On our way home, Nickole called my "parents" Sonya and Wayne and told them not to go to bed, as she picked something up for 4th of July that she soooo wanted to show them.... When we came to the house, Zevin went inside and told his grandparents to close their eyes. It was around 11:15 PM at that time already. Usually they go to bed at 10 PM. :)

So me and Nickole stepped inside and Nickole told them to open their eyes and.... THERE I WAS! Oh my, they were so excited to see me and so was I. Surprise, surprise! It totally worked out. They told me that they were fussing about not hearing from me a couple of days earlier, so they were even more surprised that I was in their living room all of a sudden.

Although it was a short weekend, I had a great time. Met the new pets, Speedy (cat), Bracy (dog) and two snakes (that I forgot the names off), played with the kids, ate a lot, watched the new Ice Age movie with the boys fighting over who is going to sit next to me (I ended up in the middle of them... totally awesooome movie by the way!!), watched some fireworks, went to church in the new church building at Clements Baptist, went to eat more at the Joe Wheeler Lodge (one of my favorite spots up there), played some more with the kids and was brought back to the airport!

Here some pictures now:

The kids on the trampoline (me and three men (that didn't know what they were doing :p ) put it up XMas 2004)
The new dog Bracy... lovely girl!

Alexis, me, Hunter and Zevin and one of the snakes!
The snake in my hand! I'm thinking about getting one myself! Kinda liked it!
Country fun! Zevin on his 4-Wheeler
More country fun! Zevin and Hunter in their pool! Zevin bought this for the family from money he made while working for his grandpa!
Alexis exhausted! She's such a ham!
My 1st time in the new church building @Clements Baptist! It's a great church community!
This was Sunday afternoon after eating at the Joe Wheeler Lodge
Alexis and Hunter playing with Speedy! Cats with Kids have to be able to handle a lot... oh boy!

We all look a little tired, don't we!? But it was sooo worth it!

Oh, I almost forgot to tell you the craziest story: On my flight to Huntsville with Delta... the doors of the airplane are already closed. I want to put my seatbelt on, look for it and don't find it. Well, the woman next to me wears a dress, so I think maybe she's sitting on it. After a while I search for the seatbelt again, move around in my seat, but still don't find it... So I ask the woman if she has seen it. She moves, we both look, no seatbelt! I press the button for the flight attendant. The lady comes to my seat... I'm saying: Excuse me, I believe my seat is missing its seatbelt! She looks at me like I said the craziest thing she has ever heard. Her: That's impossible. Could you please get up? Okay, so I get up. All eyes from the passengers in the rows around me on this scene... She tears the whole seat apart. Still no seatbelt. So she walks to her phone and calls the cockpit. A minute later the announcement of the pilot: Unfortunately, this flight is going to be delayed. We can't start. We just found out that a seat with a female in it (YES, he really said this!) is missing its seatbelt. We have to wait on the airport crew to get us a replacement. Oh boy! I wanted to sink into my chair, but okay, so far only the rows around me knew where the problem was sitting. 10 minutes later... A guy in an orange vest makes his way through the aircraft! Of course I have to sit almost at the end... Row after row that he passes turns around. Sure! They all want to know where the seat with the missing seatbelt is located. I get up, probably blushing like crazy and with a silly-embarrassed grin I excuse myself for the delay of the airplane. I was soooo glad when the airport guy and flight attendant finally had hooked up the replacement belt to my seat and I could seat myself. Come on, how odd is that??? Of over 150 seats in that aircraft it has to, of course, BE MINE, where the seatbelt is missing... The flight attendant blamed it on the vacationing summer crowds to South Florida by the way. Apparently they steal everything from the planes... even swimvests!

Then on my flight back with US Airways. I sit almost at the end of the plane again. After fighting my way through the crowds I finally make it to my row and... woah... why is there someone in my seat!? So I get involved with the flight attendant again and ask her if this is not row XY. She tells me that it is and I show her that this should be my seat. So she asks the people sitting there... The guy turns around and says: Oh, this is my fiancee and she is sitting here and I would really like to sit next to her. He looks at me: Would you mind swapping seats with me? Mine is in 1. class! Come on, don't ask me twice! Of course I swap! So after another 10 minutes of standing around in the end of the airplane and waiting on the other people to seat themselves and stow their huge luggage, I could finally walk back to the front and find my 1.class seat that was even in the 1.row. Oh, how comfy this was! Nice! And in the end, I was the first person in Fort Lauderdale to leave the plane and since I only had carry on luggage, I was quickly back at my car and at home. It could be like this more often!!! :)

Haha... this much about my 4th of July weekend experiences!!!

Haha.... soviel also zu meinen 4th of July Erlebnissen!!!

And this lovely fella is who I had to share my bed with in Alabama! I loved him! Although having had cats for many years of my life, I never had one that would snuggle up to me and cuddle in bed. Well this one did!!! :)

Anniversary!

Today I'm celebrating my 3 months anniversary at Toss Up Salads, but somehow I forgot to bake a cake... haha... let's save it for the 1/2 year... or maybe 1 year anniversary! ;) Since we were closed on Mother's Day, my boss decided that we are going to close on Father's Day as well, which is coming up this Sunday. That means for me: First day off since the 26th of May AND Siesta Key, here I come! Markus, one of the Germans I met at the Greencard Winner meeting in Miami, really loved it there and after I've seen a report on TV that a beach at Siesta Key was named the 2nd most beautiful in the United States, I want to go there of course!!!

copyright of this picture is not mine

Siesta Key is located near Sarasota at the Gulf coast, so it's going to be quite a long drive for me, but hey, Frankfurt-Rostock used to be my racetrack, so I'm not bothered by the distance, it's just going to be the speed that will get on my nerves! No 143 miles/h in a nice Audi... :(

Talking about traveling, since it's going to be my first Independence Day on 4th July that I will finally spend IN the USA, instead of missing it by days as used to, I decided to attend the traditional BBQ at my American family's (former hostfamily 2002/2003) place in Northern Alabama! I'm so so sooooo excited to see my little ones Zevin, Hunter and Alexis, the three children of my American sister Nickole and all the others again. It's been almost 15 months since my last visit! Yay!!! It's going to be a short stay, but worth it! Flying out on the 3rd after work and flying back on the 5th. Go BAMAAAA!

Go BAMAAAA!
